There’s something quietly powerful about choosing a career where you spend your days making someone else’s a little easier. Whether it’s helping an elderly neighbour get dressed in the morning or supporting someone recovering from illness at home, the work of a Personal Support Worker (PSW) is deeply human — and deeply needed.
If you’ve been considering a personal support worker certificate in Ontario, you’re looking at a field that isn’t just emotionally rewarding. It’s also one of the most in-demand healthcare careers in the country right now. In fact, this occupation is expected to face a strong risk of labour shortage over the period of 2024–2033 at the national level [4], meaning the doors into this profession are wide open and the community genuinely needs people like you.
What Does a Personal Support Worker Actually Do?
Before committing to any program, it helps to get a real sense of what day-to-day life in this role looks like. PSWs work closely with individuals who need support due to physical challenges, cognitive changes, or mental health needs. The work is hands-on, relationship-driven, and rooted in dignity.
At GLOW College, the Personal Support Worker (PSW) Certificate (NACC) Program spans 700 hours of learning designed to build your skills gradually and confidently. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll be trained to do:
- Support Daily Living: A big part of the role involves helping clients with the routines that keep them healthy and comfortable. You may work in personal support services to help with activities of daily living, including washing and bathing, mouth care, hair care, preventative skin care, routine hand or foot care, getting in and out of chairs, vehicles or beds, dressing and undressing, eating, and toileting [6]. It’s intimate, trust-based work — and learning how to do it with both skill and compassion is something GLOW College takes seriously.
- Observation and Reporting: PSWs are often the first to notice when something has changed with a client. That’s why you’ll also be trained to continuously observe clients and their environments, and to report and document unsafe conditions and behavioural, physical, or cognitive changes to an appropriate supervisor — whether that’s a family member, employer, or care coordinator [7]. Your attentiveness can genuinely make a life-saving difference.
- Delegated Medical Tasks: As you grow in your role, you may also be trusted with more advanced care responsibilities. Supervision will be required when performing a designated task as delegated by an RHP under the Regulated Health Professions Act [7], and you’ll receive proper guidance as you take those on.
What the PSW Certificate Program Looks Like
One of the most reassuring things about pursuing your personal support worker certificate in Ontario through GLOW College is how thoughtfully the program is structured. This isn’t a sink-or-swim experience — it’s designed to meet you where you are and build your confidence every step of the way.
Some certificate programs can be completed in as little as 5 months, with others taking up to 8 months [3], depending on the program format. That’s a relatively short runway to launch a meaningful new chapter in your life.
- Meeting Provincial Standards GLOW College’s program is built to meet the expectations outlined in the Personal Support Worker Training Standard, developed by the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security. Programs designed to prepare students to work as personal support workers are required to meet the expectations outlined in the most recent Personal Support Worker Training Standard, including vocational learning outcomes and essential employability skills [5] — so you graduate ready to work.
- Real-World Clinical Experience The 700-hour program blends in-class theory with hands-on clinical placements, giving you the opportunity to practice in real healthcare environments before you start your first official job. Participating employers must offer clinical placements to students as part of an Ontario PSW training program at a publicly-assisted college, private career college, district school board or Indigenous Institute that meets the 2022 program standard established by the Ontario Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security [2].
- Financial Support Along the Way Concerns about cost are understandable — but there’s good news. Eligible graduates may receive up to $35,440 in incentives, including up to $5,440 for PSW students who complete their clinical placement in a long-term care home or home and community care setting [3]. Where Can a Personal Support Worker Certificate in Ontario Take You?
Once you’ve earned your personal support worker certificate in Ontario, the career options are broader than you might expect. You’re not locked into one setting — you can find your fit in a variety of environments based on your personality, schedule, and the kind of care you feel called to provide.
- Working in People’s Homes: Many PSWs love the personal connection that comes with home-based care. The growing and aging population will increase demand for workers who provide services to seniors, persons with disabilities, or clients recovering from illness in a home setting [1]. If you value building one-on-one relationships and working with a degree of independence, this path may feel like a natural fit.
- Long-Term Care Facilities: For those who thrive in structured team environments, long-term care homes offer stable, meaningful work. These facilities care for some of the most vulnerable members of our communities, and the PSWs who work there become an essential part of residents’ daily lives.
- Community Care Organizations You might also find your calling within a community care team. Ontario Health at Home provides home care and facilitates access to community support services [6] — connecting clients to the help they need to live as independently as possible. PSWs play a central role in making that happen.
Is Now the Right Time to Start?
Honestly? It might be one of the best times in recent history. The employment outlook is rated as Good for home support workers, caregivers and related occupations (NOC 44101) in Ontario for the 2025–2027 period [1]. That kind of job security is hard to find in many industries, and it comes paired with work that carries genuine meaning.
Beyond job availability, there’s something to be said for the kind of person who chooses this career. PSWs are patient, observant, and deeply committed to the well-being of others. If that sounds like you, the field will welcome you with open arms — and so will GLOW College.
